Every year in Minnesota, more than 2,000 individuals dedicate an entire year of service to AmeriCorps, which has operated in this country since 1994. The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service has been following four College Possible Milwaukee students through their first year in college. Near the end of their first college semester, these students reflected on their experiences so far. They have faced challenges in balancing academics, family demands and social life, yet remain enthusiastic about taking new classes and getting involved on campus.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently highlighted the positive impact College Possible Milwaukee is having on its student and its community. A study conducted by Harvard University researcher Chris Avery shows that College Possible’s approach to unlocking the potential of low-income students is effective and that students served are significantly more likely to enroll in a four-year college.
