Over 300 College Possible students, staff and AmeriCorps coaches joined together to volunteer at Open Door Mission for our annual Fall Service Day on Saturday, October 20.
The group participated in various projects including sorting canned goods for the food pantry warehouse, toy sorting and making holiday bags, donation sorting at the Timberlake Outreach Center and cleaning and organizing the Lydia House.
“Fall Service Day provides our students, staff and AmeriCorps coaches the chance to give back to the community for all the support they have provided College Possible in past years. We are grateful for our partnership with Open Door Mission and the opportunity to spend our morning with them,” states Arvin Frazier, Executive Director. “We want to ensure that our students, staff and AmeriCorps members know how important it is to be involved in the Omaha community,” says Frazier.
After completion of the service project, everyone gathered at Northstar Foundation to reflect upon the day and how both organizations impact the Omaha community. Students also wrote thank you notes in honor of Veteran’s Day and created placemats for the patients at Children’s Hospital.
A special thank you to two Omaha Bruegger’s Bagel locations for donating over 400 bagels for the students to have a hearty breakfast before their day of volunteering. Also a big thank you to Domino’s Pizza on 72nd and Military for working with us to make sure we were able to have 110 boxes of pizza prepared and ready to go by 11 a.m. for lunch!
We are so very thankful to the students, staff and coaches for making Fall Service Day another great one – we appreciate all the hard work that was done to make it happen!
