The Corps Experience at College Possible

College Possible's AmeriCorps members are talented, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to help students earn admission to and succeed in college. The Corps consists of recent college graduates from across the country who have diverse knowledge and experiences. They all bring with them a desire to change the world and the determination to make it happen.

At College Possible, AmeriCorps members strive to be idealistic leaders even as they encounter obstacles in their service. They serve students directly as coaches and help build the organization's capacity by planning events, fundraising and supporting public relations.

After a year of service (although many people stick around for two), Corps members have gained the skills and experiences to prepare them for careers in education, public service, business, and much more, while knowing their time with College Possible has changed the lives of low-income students forever. Former Corps members, who go on to pursue a variety of careers, say it was most challenging and rewarding professional experience they've ever had. And not only do they have fun while doing it, they make friendships that last a lifetime. You can read their first-hand experiences here.

The AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA Experience
AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA are national service programs that offer opportunities to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. College Possible's AmeriCorps team is made up of recent college graduates who serve a term of 10 to 12 months. They are part of every area of our organization - program, development, communications and administration.

A Year at College Possible

Aug. | Sept. | Oct. | Nov. | Dec. | Jan. | Feb. | March | April | May | June | July

August
We're approaching a new year! Outgoing AmeriCorps members and VISTAs with 12-month terms are just wrapping up, while the new VISTAs are arriving fresh from their pre-service orientation. For the first few weeks, they will help Leadership Team members prepare for all-team orientation and the annual retreat. Toward the end of the month, the rest of the AmeriCorps team will arrive. All-team orientation will keep us busy as we learn more about each other and the upcoming year at College Possible. Top

September
As we wrap up a second week of orientation, we'll learn about the student populations we serve and talk about financial aid, college admissions and standardized tests. High school coaches will get settled in their schools and start working with students. College coaches will begin to meet the College Possible high school graduates who are now working toward a college degree. The college coaches will be in contact with these students throughout the year over the phone and in person. Top

October
Thanks to the planning and dedication of the Workshop and Volunteer AmeriCorps Members, each person at College Possible - students, staff, and AmeriCorps members - will get involved in the community this month for Make a Difference Day. The College Possible Board of Directors will meet for the first time this fiscal year, and students will take their very first practice ACT test as part of the College Possible Program. Students will begin campus visits, student-led workshops will give College Possible seniors a chance to share useful college information with younger students and seniors will begin the exciting process of exploring different colleges. Top

November
This month, junior and senior coaches will be assisting students with essay writing skills. The first newsletter of the year, The Gate, will be created and mailed, which will keep community members, foundation staff, donors, former AmeriCorps members and supporters updated on College Possible activities! Junior coaches begin Kaplan trainings to better assist their students in improving ACT scores. Top

December
At the end of the year, many people are making their annual charitable contributions, which keeps our development team busy. Since we could not pursue our mission without generous financial donations from our supporters, we're delighted to practice the idealistic leader trait of being grateful by writing lots of thank you notes! The Board of Directors will meet again this month while seniors are busy submitting scholarship and college applications. The second practice ACT takes place this month, and applications for next year's AmeriCorps team open. Top

January
Senior coaches help their students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and push them to continue applying for scholarships this month. Juniors will take the third practice ACT test, helping them boost their scores and confidence! Top

February
Juniors and seniors continue to visit college campuses around the region, and juniors will work with their coaches to start planning their summer enrichment activities. AmeriCorps recruitment is in full swing with the priority application deadline this month. Top

March
Transitioning to college will be the exciting topic in senior coach sessions starting this month and continuing until graduation. There are many career opportunities for alumni such as internships, job fairs, community meetings and conferences available during this time, as well as all year long. There are also scholarships available to students who are already in college, and we encourage our alumni to continue submitting those applications. The Gate will be published this month, and we'll wrap up AmeriCorps applications and start planning interviews. Top

April
Junior coaches have prepared their students all year for the real ACT, which will happen this month, and the test scores of our students will add to our current average ACT improvement of 20 percent! AmeriCorps interviews means the office is extra busy this month.  Top

May
Spring is in the air, and so are the graduation caps! Seniors will graduate from College Possible and be paired with a college coach for the next leg of their educational journey. Next year's AmeriCorps team will start to take shape as final decisions are made. Top

June
This year's final edition of The Gate will be published, announcing the accomplishments of all the College Possible students and AmeriCorps members. The Leadership Team will send a humble message of thanks to all of our supporters and partners. As the school year winds down, AmeriCorps members with 10-month terms will conclude their after school programming, celebrate student accomplishments and go on to jobs, graduate school, volunteering and more. Top

July
AmeriCorps members and VISTAs with a 12-month term of service will be busily working on summer projects and making sure the office is ready for next year's team. August is just around the corner! Top
